Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir urged the Prime Minister to take safe exit and allow holding national elections under a neutral caretaker government.

"You (PM Sheikh Hasina) have still time to take safe exit and give elections under a neutral caretaker government," he told a discussion on Thursday.

The BNP-led like-minded nationalist alliance hosted the discussion styled 'Save the Democracy and Role of Late Saifuddin Ahmed Moni' at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).

Mr Fakhrul said the Awami League (AL) used to utter such languages that signified that the country was their paternal property.

"They think this country is their own and raise their eyebrows when the opponents try to say anything about the country," he stated.

On Obaidul Quader's remark that Sheikh Hasina would be re-elected, Mr Fakhrul said, "If you (Quader) know that Hasina will come to power again and become PM, what's the use of holding elections then?"

"The Awami League is such a party that always deceives the public. They are cheats and don't have connections with the people," he alleged.

"Awami League said that the caretaker government system has been buried at Azimpur graveyard. If you (AL) did it, why you killed so many people for establishing caretaker government system in the past?"

Mr Fakhrul said the AL used to deliver many sweet talks to lure voters just before an election.

After the vote, the electorate does regret, saying: "If we knew it earlier, we wouldn't get on board your (AL) broken boat."

Mr Fakhrul lamented that the political culture of Bangladesh was basically behind the establishment of a one-party rule in the country.

He, however, spoke about mistrust and suspicion among political parties.

"We still have to think about our election system even after 52 years of the country's independence, whereas our neighbouring countries have their own better and established electoral systems."

NPP chairman Dr Fariduzzaman Farhad, Jatiya Gonotantrik Party president freedom fighter Khandaker Lutfur Rahman and general secretary SM Sahadat Hossain, among others, were present at the discussion.
