The 89th birth anniversary of the architect of multi-party democracy and founder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman is being celebrated today.
The valiant freedom fighter Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam, was born on this day in 1936 in Bagbari village under Nashipur Union in Gabtoli of Bogura district. Ziaur Rahman was the second of five sons of Chemist Mansur Rahman and Jahanara Khatun. His nickname was Kamal.
On this occasion, BNP has announced a series of programs to commemorate Ziaur Rahman’s birth anniversary.
In a message sent to the media, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir expressed deep respect for the national leader, Ziaur Rahman, the proponent of Bengali nationalism. He prayed for the peace of his soul. Fakhrul stated that Ziaur Rahman was a guiding figure for the nation during times of crisis. After the Pakistani military attacked the people of Bangladesh on March 25, 1971, he organized armed resistance.
Fakhrul said that on March 26, Ziaur Rahman declared Bangladesh’s independence from the Kalurghat Radio Station in Chittagong. By declaring independence, he initiated the liberation war with immense bravery. From that day, the people of the country recognized his extraordinary leadership. When the country was falling into deep despair under authoritarian rule after independence, and national progress was obstructed, Ziaur Rahman took the leadership in a time of crisis.
Fakhrul further mentioned that when the ruling authorities, through false promises and political deception, suppressed freedom of speech and democracy, pushing the country into a state of famine and chaos, Ziaur Rahman assumed state power following the historic 7th November Soldier-People’s Revolution. Starting his career as a soldier, Zia's life was marked by his repeated emergence as a savior during the country's crises.
The BNP leader added that upon assuming power, Ziaur Rahman restored the independence of the judiciary and the press, establishing a multi-party democracy. He initiated a policy of production and self-reliance for the country, starting agricultural and educational revolutions, and modernizing irrigation systems. He also coordinated voluntary labor and government assistance to excavate and re-excavate 1,400 canals for agricultural development.
Ziaur Rahman, known by the nickname Komol, is remembered for his extraordinary patriotism, courage, integrity, and simple personality, making significant contributions to the nation.
Notably, Ziaur Rahman founded the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on September 1, 1978.
