The government has again indulged in the games of implicating the opposition activists in false cases and arresting them ahead of the parliamentary election, alleged BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. He also reiterated his demands of resignation of the government and next election under a non-party caretaker government.
"Election under a non-party caretaker government has now become a national demand," he said while speaking at a rally and silent road march organised by Bangladesh Sanmilito Peshajibi Parishad (BSPP) in the capital on Saturday to press home the demands of government's resignation and election-time non-party government.
Mirza Fakhrul said some 4 million criminal cases have been filed against the leaders and workers in a democratic country. "How can we compromise with them? How can we take part in election under them? Is it possible?"
"There is no alternative way in front of BNP," he said, adding that "we all have to come forward to protect our independence and sovereignty. One point demand is the demand of a particular political party or individual, rather, it is the demand of entire nation," he said.
The BNP secretary general said, "They have imposed conditions on Iqbal Mahmud Tuku and Amanullah Aman. They have imposed conditions on our chairperson and acting chairperson. They have given Habib life-term jail sentence. They have sentenced 14 people including Mintu in Ishwardi. They claimed that those convicts attacked Sheikh Hasina's motorcade. Can you imagine?"
Mirza Fakhrul said, "We feel very hopeless to the judiciary and when we go to court. The most popular democratic leader Khaleda Zia has been kept under house arrest through court. The lower court punished her in a case, while the upper court extended that punishment. Where will we go? Khadijatul Kubra, a Jagannath University student, has been kept detained for 10 months under the notorious Digital Security Act for a presentation on YouTube."
Calling upon the lawyers, professionals and intellectuals to get involved in one-point oust government movement, Mirza Fakhrul said no change becomes complete until and unless the professionals and intellectuals come forward. "You can remember about Dr Zoha, who played a glortious role in anti-Ayub movement. Following the death of Dr Milon in 1990s, people took to the street. The entire nation is waiting to see you role."
Former attorney general and Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum's president AJ Mohammad Ali presided over the rally.
Speaking at the rally, he said, "The constitution has now become ineffective. We are trying to build a Bangladesh which is free from occupiers. Question doesn't arise at all to sit for talks with the occupiers. Fair election will be held in Bangladesh. Our movement will continue until and unless a fair election is held in Bangladesh."
The rally was also addressed by Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB) secretary general Dr Farhad Ali, former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University Dr Anwarullah Chowdhury, Ganaforum's general secretary Advocate Subrata Chowdhury, and Jahangirnagar University's teacher Prof Dr Abdul Latif Masum, among others.
Following the rally, a road march was brought out which got terminated reaching the Press Club premises. Leaders of lawyers, doctors, engineers, agriculturists, journalists, teachers, poets and novelists took part in the road march.
