Statement of BNP Health Affairs Secretary Dr. Rafiqul Islam
"On 19 November 2024, an incident of assault occurred at the 250-bed Nilphamari General Hospital involving an intern doctor, Dr. Suraiya Jannat Sampa, from the first batch of Nilphamari Medical College. While attending to a critically ill patient, she was physically attacked by individuals claiming to be the patient's relatives when their unreasonable demands were not met. She was threatened with death, verbally abused with offensive language, and her duty room was vandalized. Additionally, unauthorized Facebook live streaming was conducted with defamatory remarks, which is highly condemnable and a heinous offense.
Since the student-people uprising on August 5, repeated attacks have taken place in hospitals. Ghosts of the previous fascist government still occupy critical positions, perpetuating their conspiracies. They are creating instability not only in the health sector but across various sectors. As a result, incidents of violence and abuse of doctors in hospitals continue to occur. This cannot go on.
I strongly condemn this horrific attack on Dr. Suraiya Jannat Sampa and demand immediate justice for all perpetrators involved in this incident and past cases of harassment of doctors.
Additionally, I urge the interim government to remove the collaborators of the fascist regime still holding influential positions and to thwart all conspiracies against the nation and destabilization strategies targeting the health sector. I also demand immediate and effective steps to enact and enforce a health protection law to safeguard the rights of doctors and patients."
